Q: How did you get started in your career?

A: I was introduced to medical laboratory science by my uncle, who brought me into his hospital laboratory. I was eight years old, and I chose my career that day.

Q: What made you choose this career?

A: The marriage of science and health care was (and still is) exciting to me. I loved science, but wanted to make a daily impact on people’s lives. Ongoing innovation and elevated diagnostic capabilities keep me in this field.

Q: What are you most excited about regarding your Lab Institute talk?

A: Over the past two years, the laboratory has been pressure-tested and prevailed. The value of the laboratory is strong, and we are more relevant today than ever before. I’m excited to share how we can build on our successes and continue to strengthen our industry, and improve patient care.

Q: What is a typical day at work like for you?

A: Every day starts with a focus on the patient, reminding me why I do what I do. Every day is different, sometimes easy, sometimes stressful, but focusing on doing the best thing for our patients keeps me grounded.

Q: What five words best describe you?

A: Enthusiastic, strategic, enthusiastic, action-oriented, and did I mention enthusiastic?

Q: What’s your typical order when you visit a coffee shop?

A: Nonfat latte, extra shot of espresso. How do you think I keep this energy level up?

Q: What’s your best story to tell at a cocktail party?

A: My first professional job was in the same hospital I was born in. (And I did not grow up in that community, so it was a true coincidence).

Q: What is one important skill you think all leaders should have?

A: Communication—two ways, through both listening and speaking/writing.

Q: What hobbies or interests do you have outside of your job?

A: The pandemic forced me back into the garden. This year I have preserved over 150 jars of tasty treats from my garden.

Q: What’s the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?

A: Three: 1) Get an advanced degree, 2) Find a mentor, and 3) Get involved with a professional association.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish in the next few years in your current position?

A: To continue elevating the laboratory’s importance in health care.

Q: What do you like most about attending/participating in events like the G2 Intelligence Lab Institute?

A: Networking, learning best practices from others, getting a view into upcoming industry changes and trends, and making new friends.
