Leveraging near-patient nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) in the clinic setting is a growing business practice that many health system laboratories have been hesitant or slow to adopt. Placing highly sensitive and comparatively expensive laboratory testing into the hands of the clinic personnel should carry some measure of reservation.

After years of hesitancy, our health system has only recently begun to adopt this practice. However, those who leverage appropriate NAATs in the clinic setting with trained laboratory personnel stand to benefit significantly through improved diagnostics and workflow efficiencies.

A deep dive review of our internal processes regarding diagnostics for Group A Streptococcus provided numerous insights. By adopting a clinic-based NAAT, many benefits can be realized for patients, providers, and staff.
